HER STORY

LAURA COOMBS

Manchester City’s attacking midfielder Laura Coombs on the highs of playing for her club and how she stays calm before a big match.

ON DISCOVERING FOOTBALL: I had a great childhood and was brought up in Dartford, where I was able to have a kickabout with friends. I never thought I'd be a professional football player. I came from a place where it was a boys' game and I was the only girl. But it soon became a hobby and I started playing youth football in London, joined the England under-19s team in 2009 and made my senior debut for the Lionesses in 2015.

Given that the women’s game was still growing when I was getting started, the advice that I received was to keep on going, to train and play but, most importantly, to enjoy every moment. That advice helped prepare me for highlights across my career such as my Manchester City debut against Lugano in 2019.

‘I enjoy turning up for big matches looking smart and put together.’

ON HER STYLE: I really love dressing up but I want to be comfortable too. So if I have an outfit that’s comfortable but looks feminine and dressy, that’s ideal for me. I enjoy turning up for big matches looking smart and put together. That can be quite intimidating for the other team when they’re just in their casual tracksuits.

‘Getting a call-up back to the Lionesses squad after eight years was surreal and taught me the value of sustained hard work and patience.’

‘My proudest moment so far is winning the Euros last summer. To achieve a trophy with your country is something I've always dreamed about.’

ON HER PROUDEST MOMENT: My career highlight is a recent one: playing our local rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium in December last year in front of 44,000 people. We drew 1-1. Obviously we would have liked to win that game but it was just an amazing day!

Getting a call-up back to the Lionesses squad after eight years was surreal and taught me the value of sustained hard work and patience.

It was worth the wait!

ON PREPARATION: Some people like to pump themselves up before a big game but I'm the opposite; I like to listen to chilled music that keeps me calm and grounded. That way, when I go out on the pitch, I'm the best version of myself.

ON HER MOST POWERFUL
PIECE OF ADVICE FOR OTHER WOMEN:

‘You have to believe in yourself before anyone else believes in you.’
