Current Role: Director of Equities at Kempen & Co bank, Amsterdam where Anneka is Co-Head the Benelux Equities division.
Brief bio and Career Background:
I am a 26 year old British born and bred banker. I have always done things very early in my life; married at 19, a mother at 22 and I’ve always lived by a principle of “all or nothing”. I’ve had an unconventional start… At a young age I took a strong liking to chess where I became UK National Chess Champion for five consecutive years.
I also explored other areas like MindMapping for which I was presented a Bronze Award at the International Mind Sports Olympiad, presented by MindMapping founder, Tony Buzan. During my studies I developed a keen interest in Banking.
I learnt my way around the industry via various placements across the city: starting at Citigroup, KPMG, Rothschild, followed by two placements at Goldman Sachs, London. Today I Co-Head the Benelux Equities division of Kempen & Co bank in Amsterdam.
Anneka, you have so many noteworthy achievements under your belt, what has been the biggest milestone in your career so far?
The biggest milestone so far has probably been my ranking in the Thomson Reuters Extel Survey where I was the youngest person to have ever been ranked #1 (ranked #1 in Benelux Equity Sales in 2013, #2 in 2012 and #1 in 2011).
You currently head up quite a male-led team, what advise do you have for women working in a similar environment?
The banking scene in the Netherlands does indeed tend to be male orientated. The advice I would give to women is to be yourself, work hard and to gain the respect from your male colleagues!
How does the Amsterdam industry compare to that of London?
Unsurprisingly, the market in Amsterdam is significantly smaller than London. It is also interesting to see the large number of local banks that operate in such a small market. This makes it necessary to truly stand out from the crowd and do things differently.
What piece of career advice would you share that has helped you achieved your goals so far?
The best piece of career advice I’ve been given is to always build up the courage to ask in life…if you don’t ask you don’t get! It’s amazing how many opportunities we miss because we simply don’t ask.
You travel back to London quite a bit, where is the first place in town you love coming back to (this could be a store, restaurant or area!)?
The first place I love coming back to is Regents Park. It’s the area I call home and one of my favorite areas in London because of its serenity but also its proximity to everything.
If we were visiting Amsterdam for the weekend, where would you recommend we go?
I would recommend that you jump on a boat and explore Amsterdam the way it supposed to explored which is via the canals. It is really a beautiful city!
Describe your style for work? Do you have a style icon?
I like simple and chic. I don’t have a style icon per say but I love people watching and getting ideas for belts, scarves and necklaces to make work outfits look more interesting. I don’t like prints or very bold colors in the office… my staple colours are taupe, white, navy blue and black.
Which dress from The Fold Collection is your favourite
My favorite dress from The Fold Collection is the Astor dress. The fit is lovely and it’s one of those classic dresses that you can dress up or dress down for the occasion.
